Crusader Engine Interface Unit
Success Story - Crusader Power Pack Project
Crusader was a Concept vehicle developed by for the US Army.
The R2G2 Engine Interface Unit provided Top Level Control of its V12 engine. This included a sophisticated Starter Control System, operation of the Inlet manifold Heater and Block Heater, and communication via CAN, J1708 / J1587 and Mil-Std-1553. The EIU also embodied the Engine Protection System, monitoring 6 engine pressures and output torque.
The software was written in Ada in compliance with Mil-Std-498 to give exceptional reliability and documented quality.
R2G2 developed the EIU hardware to give Fully Rugged Contruction and compliance with the full range of environmental requirements including Mil-Std-461 EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility).
Being involved from the outset, R2G2 acted as consultant in the customer's design discussions and advised on matters of electronic control to bring forward an optimised system. We supported testing of the power pack in the customer's test cells to calibrate and fine-tune the control parameters, and EMC testing, and provided ongoing telephone support for our system during vehicle development work.
Power packs including the R2G2 EIU were Delivered on Time.
The Crusader EIU was developed from the R2VEC processor platform, mounted on a high-density interface board and with a additional expansion interface board to cater for the very large number of interfaces required for this application. The R2VEC was fitted with its optional 1553 communications device.
