What it's all about

Everyone is familiar with electronics, and knows that there is a lot of it in a modern car, but you don't often see the electronic modules that do the clever control behind the scenes.   There are modules that control the dashboard displays, the windows, the interior lights and most importantly the engine and transmission, but they are hidden in the engine compartment or behind the dashboard - the original meaning of the term 'embedded'.

These electronic modules have to be designed to survive wide temperature ranges, vibration and moisture.   If they are responsible for safety-related equipment, like the engine, then they are known as 'safety-critical' and have to be designed and built using special techniques to ensure they are reliable.

In recent years, emissions regulations and safety requirements need more accurate measurements and more complex calculations.  Cleaner exhaust calls for more precise timing of the diesel injection, often to accuracies of 1 microsecond.   Furthermore, quality standards require more care, more documentationand more exhaustively tested software.    The development of embedded electronics for tomorrow's vehicles is a specialised arena.   At the forefront of diesel engine management since 1994, R2G2 has developed procedures and techniques to meet these needs.
